Where to Start in Planning a Black History Skit Celebration

Once you have a Black History skit, it's time to start planning. Now I know you want this celebration to be something your children, family and the community will remember for years to come.

There are 5 key steps you’ll want to follow BEFORE you start planning your Black History skit. This is going to be the firm foundation that all of your future planning will rest upon. Three Elementary Black History Month Skit Ideas

When I decided to write my ownBlack History Month Skits, I wanted to start with famousBlack History heroesthat I knew my students would already be familiar with. Martin Luther King Jr. skit was my first choice because we were already going to celebrate Dr. King's birthday in January. I could use his birthday as a great connection to launching the skit with my students.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Skit

I decided to focus this skit mostly on Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous speech. Maybe someday, I will more scenes about the other amazing accomplishments.

This skit performance takes about 5-10 minutes to perform. So it's a great skit to combine with any other fun activities you have planned to make Black History Month even more memorable.

This skit includes the following two scenes:

Scene 1: I Have a Dream
Scene 2: The Speech

Rosa Parks Skit

I just had to write a Rosa Parks Skit. Rosa and I have a special connection. We have the same birthday. My students always got a kick out of that.

This skit performance takes about 15-20 minutes to perform. So a little bit longer than the Martin Luther King Jr. skit. My 2nd grade class performed both of these skits at our Black History Month Celebration. It was a huge hit!

This skit includes the following four scenes:

Scene 1: Voting Rights
Scene 2: Sit For Freedom
Scene 3: We Had Enough
Scene 4: Bus Boycott

Ruby Bridges Skit

The Ruby Bridges Skit is hot of the press. I just finished writing this skit in January 2023. What I love about Ruby Bridges' story is that she was just a little girl in elementary school. So my 2nd graders could definitely relate to her.

Because this is a brand new skit, I never performed this one with my 2nd graders. But if I ever do go back into classroom, the Ruby Bridges skit is one that I would want my students to do.

This skit includes the following six scenes:

Scene 1: Life in Mississippi
Scene 2: New Orleans, Here We Come!
Scene 3: Small Girl, Big Job
Scene 4: First Day of School
Scene 5: Ruby's Courageous 1st Grade Teacher
Scene 6: Ruby Forgives

Before I purchase the Ruby B. Skit how many characters can be okay in the skit? What addition lessons come with the skit? This will be my first tone to direct a 2nd grade Black History skit I know I will need done guide.

  I’m excited you’re interested in the Ruby Bridges Skit. Congratulations on this being your first time directing a 2nd grade Black History skit. I was a 2nd grade teacher for 5 years. As far as how many characters are okay for the skit…
  Scene 1: There are 4-5 characters (depending on if you want one or two narrators.)
  Scene 2: There are 4-5 characters (same characters as scene 1)
  Scene 3: There are 9-10 characters
  Scene 4: There are 8-9 characters
  Scene 5: There are 6-7 characters
  Scene 6: There are 3-4 characters
  There are several ways you can do this skit. Depends on how many students and children are going to be participating.
  1. All children participate in every scene.
  2. Some children play multiple parts.
  3. Not all children participate in every scene, but they all are in the Ruby skit somewhere.
  There are no additional lessons that come with the skit at this time. However, we are always creating new resources. So I will add this to the list. Ruby Bridges props are coming soon. Can you please share a little bit more about the “done guide” you spoke of? I would greatly appreciate it. Have a great night.

  Yes we do have scripts for middle school. Currently, we have a skit for Jackie Robinson at the secondary level. Next week is Rosa Parks skit for the secondary level will be available.
