What age is Throne of Glass book 1 appropriate for? ›

I'd recommend books 1–3 for 13-year-olds and the rest for 14-year-olds. The first book, while containing minimal sexual content and language, includes occasional violent/gory gombat, but it's written in a way that's appropriate for teens.

There is so much swearing, it's very dark, there are drug references, and the later books have extremely explicit romance scenes. I would not recommend Throne of Glass for anyone, and if I did, it would be at least 18+.

Apart from Crown of Midnight's fade-to-black sex scenes, the only Throne of Glass books that could be considered spicy are Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn, and Kingdom of Ash. Of the three, Empire of Storms has the most explicit sequences, and it can be considered the turning point for Maas' fantasy series.

The first four books are limited to gore and violence as far as 'graphic' scenes go, fitting into dark YA with a spicy ranking of 0. Books 5-7, however, turn up the heat into New Adult fantasy with a ranking of 3/5 spice.

Additionally, while Throne of Glass does contain romance, there is definitely a larger focus on the fantasy elements.

It's not exactly clean, there are explicit scenes in the last two three books but they are never over the top and focus is very clearly more on plot.

If you're debating whether to start with “Throne of Glass” or “ACOTAR,” it depends on your preference: “ACOTAR” is romance forward — if you lean toward that genre, start there. “Throne of Glass” is big on the epic fantasy elements — you lean toward that, start there.

A good read, but be cautious

While it does contain violence, sex, etc, the descriptions are not nearly as graphic as in the show and usually very brief. The sex scenes are not worded as they usually are in other books and the language is not anything a teen would hear at school.

Is Throne of Glass or Assassin's Blade first? “Assassin's Blade” is the prequel to the series, while “Throne of Glass” is the official first part. You can start reading the series from “Throne of Glass” and then read “Assassin's Blade” later on if you want to learn more about the characters and stories.

I would recommend the reading level of this book to about 10-18 year olds.
